Mea Culpa...I should have taken more time to reflect on this blog by Brene Brown before posting. I'm embarassed. I've been debating whether or not to just slink away in embarassment or to call myself out. As someone who is all about calling out injustice and pointing out the importance of a just peace, I need to apologize, hold myself accountable, and do better going forward! So here goes...The Palestine/Israel conflict is not symetrical. Whilst I support the human dignity of human beings on all sides of the conflict and seek not to call names, demonise anyone or conduct ad hominem attacks, there is a clear injustice being perpetuated against Palestinians, to the point that as the ICJ has noted in its ruling that it is in grave danger of being a genoicide in the making that needs watching. Israel has been ordered by the Court to report on how it is ensuring that it is taking care not to indiscriminately kill Palestininan civilians. Meanwhile since the ruling, approximately 150 Palestinians per day have been killed by Israeli bombs and attacks.The main things Brown missed that people here have drawn attention to, and whose voices and perspective I value include:1. How hurtful the human shield comment was2. The disproportionate destruction of Palestinian lives, hospitals, educational institutions (culturcide). Over 30,000 Palestinians, more than half, being women and children, have died. The entire health care infrastructure has been destroyed. 3. The defunding of UNRWA and a deepening humanitarian aid crisis in Gaza 4. Referring to the conflict as a war, equating Hamas to a State when it doesn't have equal state status. 5. Collective punishment of Palestinians with entire generations of families being targetted and killed, eliminating them from the family register.6. The deliberate targetting of journalists with the highest number of journalists in such a short period of time ever being deliberately targetted and executed along with in many cases members of their family. Over 185 Palestinian journalists to date have been deliberately murdered by targeted Israeli bombs.7. She does not put October 7th into context of 75 years of Israeli occupation of Palestine8. No mention of the ICJ rulings that are exploring Israeli's destruction of Gaza as being potentially GENOCIDE9. Failure to centre the suffering of children10. Neglecting Israel's human rights record of abuses which has been documented for decades including by Israeli organizations such as Bet Selem.I hope given the outpouring here and on her blog she will take time to learn, reflect and grow in her understanding. In the Western world there’s an attempt by dominant groups in power to separate DEIB as this corporate “nice-to-have”, pushing real world issues to the outskirts as a non-corporate issue. — “let’s make this a great place to work,” — “we value diversity” — “let’s show people how much we care” If you are really doing “the work” of “DEI”, then it’s also about:— questioning systems of oppression, including how corporations are part of the problem — standing up for human rights — thinking about your own role, beliefs, etc and challenging your own thinking — issues for Black, Indigenous, other People of colour, and the most marginalized groups are centred in the work (instead of being pushed to the outskirts or ignored completely) If issues like this are difficult to navigate for your company, then you have not been investing enough into DEI. #dei #deib #deij #ceasefire
